A Quick History of Chemours Nonstick Coatings
DuPont chemist Roy Plunkett discovered the Chemours Nonstick PTFE fluoropolymer resin in 1938. Since that time, Chemours Company (formerly DuPont) has developed many varieties of Chemours Nonstick industrial coatings that include PTFE, PFA, FEP, and ETFE (also known as Tefzel®).
As a result of the versatility of these fluoropolymers, Chemours Nonstick industrial coatings have gained acceptance in a wide range of applications and are specified in many Mil-Spec and company specifications. Many industries find value in the properties of nonstick, low coefficient of friction, chemical resistance, and chemical inertness.
Chemours Nonstick Industrial Coatings Properties
Nonstick
Very few solid substances will permanently adhere to Chemours Nonstick coatings, and the few tacky substances that do show adhesion will easily release.
Low Coefficient of Friction
The coefficient of friction of fluoropolymer coatings is in the range of 0.05 to 0.20, depending on the load, sliding speed and particular fluoropolymer utilized.
Heat Resistance
Chemours Nonstick coatings fluoropolymer coatings can operate continuously at temperatures up to 550°F/290°C and can be used intermittently to 600°F/315°C with adequate ventilation.
Nonwetting
Since Chemours Nonstick coatings surfaces are both oleophobic and hydrophobic, they are not readily wet. Cleanup is easier and more thorough, and in many cases, Chemours Nonstick coatings are “self-cleaning”.
Chemical Resistance
Chemours Nonstick coatings are normally unaffected by chemical environments and are great anti-corrosion coatings. The only known chemicals that affect all fluoropolymer coatings are molten alkali metals and highly reactive fluorinating agents.
Unique Electrical Properties
Over a wide range of frequencies Chemours Nonstick fluoropolymers have high dielectric strength (typically 2000 V/mil), low dissipation factor and very high surface resistivity. Some coatings can even be made electroconductive enough to be used as an anti-static coating.
Cryogenic Stability
Many Chemours Nonstick fluoropolymer coatings withstand severe temperature extremes without loss of physical properties, as low as -454°F (-270°C).
